Jo loved the chase, the wind in her hair and brush underfoot. The exhilaration she felt after confronting a wild animal was freedom to her. It was all she needed; marriage held no interest to her. When her mother Ellen, a local river goddess, informed her she had been betrothed to Dean it took all her power not to flee on the spot.
With her wedding day soon approaching, Jo took to stealing away at night into the woods, the moonlight her only companion on solitary hunts. One night as she wandered aimlessly -- restlessly -- she discovered a hidden bathing pool in a particularly isolated section of forest. Upon seeing no one, she decided a cool bath might do her good. She had already lowered herself into the water when Charlie arrived.
"So, you're the one my brother is going to marry." Charlie regarded her coolly, and Jo shivered. "I'm surprised you found my sanctuary."
"I didn't know." Jo was rendered speechless when Charlie began to disrobe herself.
"Which part?" Charlie made her way towards Jo, circling her slowly in the water. She allowed herself one appraisal of Jo's form. She had to admit she was impressed by her athletic build, but Jo's hair enchanted her. Somehow it managed to shine golden even in her silver light.
"Honestly? Both." Jo was sure Charlie wasn't angry with her or at least hopeful, even if she was being circled like a wounded bird.
"Do you want to marry him?" When Jo looked away Charlie made sure to find her eyes again. Jo bit her lip and shook her head.
"I'm sure he's great and all, there's just nothing I care about more than my freedom. I need to be free." Charlie grinned wolfishly. "What?"
"If you don't want to marry Dean, then don't."
"I can't just leave."
"Yes, you can."
"I have a duty to my family, Charlie. I'm not like you." Jo bristled slightly, prepared for Charlie to get angry. But to her surprise Charlie just continued smiling.
"But you are like me, Jo." Hearing her name on Charlie's lips made Jo shiver again in a completely different way. Charlie's breath felt like magic.
"I can't be. Besides, how would I even get out of it?" Jo shook her head again. "Trust me, there's nothing I want more than to chase the hunt for the rest of my life."
"You can if you come with me."
